More sophisticated image processing, new garden pics.

We've submitted a paper detailing some experiments on using content-based image processing for digital forensics. This takes image analysis a step beyond simple thumbnails or the use of cryptographic hashes. The experiments show that we can very accurately identify images that have been rescaled, rotated, cropped, mirror-imaged, etc. Since the identification is based on databases of image features rather than images, it will be possible to accurately identify contraband images (true when using cryptographic hashes, except that most image transformations will not eliminate matches, as with hashes).

We're hoping to get a panel on next generation forensics set up at IFIP 2005 in Orlando. More on that when we hear from the organizers.

Oh, and new garden pics are up. Check them out here, if you're interested.
