Frequently Asked Questions

How do I use e-mail?

  1. How do I check my e-mail while sitting at a Sun workstation?

    1. Click on the mailer icon (shown in the diagram below) or simply type in dtmail in a terminal window.

    2. Select IMAP if the following screen appears (if it does not appear, proceed to step (d) and ensure that you have the correct settings):

    3. Key in the information as depicted in the diagram below (use your standard UNIX login and password).

    4. You should now have access to your Inbox. To make sure that the correct settings have been saved, click on Options » Basic and ensure that mailhost is set as the IMAP inbox server. To send mail, make sure that mailhost is set as the outgoing mail (SMTP) server as well. To do this, click on Options » Advanced and enter the appropriate information. Read the help information provided in the Mailer program to familiarize yourself with it (Click on Help » Overview in the menu).
    5. The options for accessing your e-mail should now be permanently set. In the future, you will only have to provide your password to gain access to the mail system. Your e-mail address will be: username@cs.uno.edu
  2. How do I check my e-mail from off-campus?

    • There are 2 ways of doing this: the first method is to log in remotely to the department systems (see the FAQ on this for instructions). After you have logged in, you can use the text based e-mailer pine. Simply type pine at the command line and press enter. Information on how to use pine can be found in the Pine Tutorial Getting Started With Email Using Pine. Alternately, you may use mail. Type man mail at the command line to learn more about this.
    • You may also check your e-mail from off-campus using a POP or IMAP client such as Microsoft Outlook or Netscape Mail. Use the server mailhost.cs.uno.edu as your IMAP or POP3 server. You must provide your own SMTP server. Ask your Internet Service Provider for this information. Consult the Help documentation for your e-mail program to learn how to set these options. Your UNIX user name and password should be used for authentication.
  3. How do I forward my Computer Science e-mail to another e-mail address?

Using your favorite text editor, create a file named .forward in your home directory (note the "." before the file name). In this file, insert a single line with the e-mail address that your want your e-mail to be forwarded to and save the file. Henceforth, all e-mail directed at your Computer Science account will be forwarded to that address.

  4. What are the restrictions on e-mail use?

    • You may not use your account to perform mass mailings (more commonly called "spam").
    • You may not use your account to send harassing or threatening e-mails.
    • You may not send extremely large attachments (greater than 1 MB in size).
    • You may not share your account with anyone.
    • You may not send messages to department mailing lists without prior authorization. If it is a class mailing list, you must be in that class.
    • In addition, any attempts to subvert the security of the e-mail system and/or use it for illegal activities will result in an immediate loss of computing privileges.
  5. Can I keep my e-mail account after I graduate?

Yes. Let the systems staff know that you would like your e-mail account preserved.
